UPS Diesel Storage Tank Removal

CommTank provided an underground storage tank removal service for the United Parcel Service (UPS) facility at 2400 Brown Avenue, Manchester NH. The 10,000-gallon underground tank had stored diesel to fuel their fleet of delivery trucks but was no longer being used.

Diesel Storage Tank Removal Procedure

  • Obtain necessary permits (tank removal permit, trench permit, etc.)
  • Provide Dig Safe utility clearance of property (identify underground utilities)
  • Notify New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services(NH DES) 30 days prior to removal
  • Prepare a confined space entry permit and a site-specific health and safety plan
  • Saw cut and remove a 4’ x 25’ section of asphalt located on top of the UST
  • Drain fuel from the fuel lines, pump set, and expansion tank in the building
  • Excavate soil on top of the UST
  • Create a manway into the UST
  • Remove all pumpable contents and tank bottoms
  • Measure explosive gases using a 4-gas meter
  • Clean the inside of the UST
  • Prepare tank for inspection with the local fire department and NH DES
  • Field screen soil using an organic vapor meter (OVM)
  • Submit a soil sample to a state-certified analytical laboratory for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) analysis
  • Transport the UST and associated piping to a licensed tank yard for disposal
  • Repair a 150 square foot section of asphalt disturbed as a result of the UST removal
  • Provide a UST closure report , which includes an environmental assessment, permit, and tank disposal receipt
